My father was murdered in 2022 and guess what the police don't even have photos of crime scene as we now have a private investigator who has requested it from the police. as the police have failed us completely. They haven't bothered to do anything but ask us for money

As a journalist focusing on the intricacies of law enforcement in South Africa, I've come across a troubling pattern within the South African Police Service (SAPS) that raises serious questions about its capability to serve the public effectively. My investigations have uncovered a disconcerting narrative of a police force plagued by systemic issues, which have led me to question whether the SAPS is indeed fit for its intended purpose.

In my reportage, one of the most heart-wrenching stories was the killing of a disabled teenager—a stark incident that spotlighted the endemic brutality within the SAPS ranks. This brutality is not just a one-off occurrence but points to a lack of training and accountability that seems to pervade the entire force.

My sources within the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) have expressed grave concerns about the SAPS's severe capacity constraints. Despite government efforts to bolster the force with new recruits, the numbers are simply not sufficient to stem the tide of crime sweeping across the nation.

Furthermore, during the July unrest, the SAPS's inadequate response was almost universally criticized, laying bare a rigid bureaucracy struggling to reform. This event was a critical moment for me, as it underscored the SAPS's apparent ineptitude in managing large-scale civil disruptions—an essential capability for any national police service.

Perhaps the most damning of all is the rampant corruption I've uncovered within the SAPS. From the highest echelons down to the street-level officer, corruption and criminality appear to be endemic. This institutional corruption has not only compromised the safety of South African citizens but has also allowed crime to flourish under the watch of those sworn to prevent it.

I've encountered a growing distrust in the public eye, which was quantified by a 2019 survey revealing that nearly half of the respondents viewed most police officials as corrupt. This public perception is further exacerbated by high-profile criminal cases involving police generals themselves.

In documenting these issues, it has become increasingly clear to me that the SAPS, in its current state, represents a significant cost to taxpayers—not just in monetary terms but in the very fabric of societal trust and safety. The potential for the SAPS to descend into further chaos and become an agent of crime, rather than its adversary, seems not just possible but increasingly probable. It's a distressing state of affairs, one that demands immediate attention and radical reform if the SAPS is to fulfill its mandate to protect and serve the people of South Africa.

Actually - all of the concerns listed above are relevant. It is hard to see how any draft policies could be effective given the state of the the Government and the blatant corruption and nepotism that is rife throughout all government departments. One only has to visit one's local Police Station to see that a complete and utter overall would be needed - and funds - the local Police Stations are a disgrace.

My problem with the draft policy is that it just lays out the expected delivery of and current issues with the police services, at a very high and broad level.

There is no description of how this will be enforced, who will be held accountable for non-delivery or how... There is no mention of how the errant police members will be prosecuted and what sort of sentencing they will receive... there is no mention of how the well behaved and professional police members will be actively incentivised to continue their good service despite the growing pressure from those other individuals (or groups).

Focusing just on SAPS, I can't explain just how frustrating it is to have to sit, time and again, in an empty police station for 3 hours while the police officers just chat and drink tea, eat sandwiches and blatantly ignore you - in the hopes that you will simply go away and the incident won't be reported. This happens EVERY single time I have to go report something. The number of times I have had police refuse to allow me to report an incident over the years, is also just astounding.
It is because they are incentivised based on reported crimes alone - effectively, they don't care if you got hijacked, robbed, assaulted, raped ... just as long as it's not reported. so as long as the "official" crime stats are going down, they get their bonuses and are thus incentivised to perpetuate the behaviour. same goes with the bribes.... why would anyone ever trust a policing unit that only responds to bribes, and in many cases goes out of their way to actively perpetrate innocent civilians just so they can screw them into providing a monetary incentive to be allowed to go about their business as usual.
...Metro Police are as bad, or in my opinion, even worse.
...and this new anti-crime force ... don't even get me started on how flaccid that bunch are - what a total and utter waste of tax payers money!

All words - I do NOT TRUST any policeman/ policewoman anymore. intimidation is part of their uniform, their core, and they use it to their advantage. Ask my niece and her 10year old daughter who was told of and THREATENED by the POLICEwoman in uniform. Ask me who was hit by a taxi who skipped the red light and when I took the matter to the police station was told: " shame he is only the driver - I am sure your insurance will fix the car"! Nobody to assist me in the language of choice. No empathy. The "Poor" taxi driver was the one who was sympathised with. of course he drove of without any responsibility or retribution for him!! The police are part of the ANC government they rule. so does the blue light brigade!!!

This new draft sounds good but is useless unless the leadership becomes strong, develops sound ethical and trustworthy managers and leaders. In the current state of bribery, mistrust, corruption and selfseeking injustices, nothing will work with even the best policies on paper.

No, we don’t need new laws.
We need competent staff and enough of them. We need fit and well trained officers. They need to be paid well. The staff need the right / working equipment.
There needs to be a change in “company culture” and that change starts from the top, by getting a competent leader.

KEY POLICY PROPOSALS
1. The creation of a professional and quality policing
Looking at the physical build of most of our local police force, I doubt if they would be competent enough to brace the onslaught of the fleet footed and well armed criminals who are running the drug & in-transit cash heists, as well as hijacking and individual robberies and assault.
2. The provision of efficient and effective policing service delivery
The reaction time is a critical factor, some private investigators are not
supplied with sufficient protective clothing as well as back-up, exposing them to fatal injury (this puts for the question of how efficient and effective they would be.
3. Improving the legitimacy and community-police trust relations
this issue is based on how honest the police are. I dare say, that there are still a lot of police men and woman who accept bribes.?? How ligit can they then be to the community (open to bribery and corruption needs to be addressed.
4. Building a strong and ethical leadership, management and governance architecture.
At what cost will this be achieved. Instilling honesty, dedication and a need for protecting the community does not come easy and without a decent remuneration. Also bearing in mind that the corrupt , unqualified and incapable police who are still in service, will have to be replaced.

Most of South Africans have lost all faith in the Police. It would/will take long time four us to believe in them again. We need more Police in our Communities in helping with crime. Also the way we are treated by the Police. Absolutely no humanity and compassion.

Draft points are what we need but what we don't need is for anybody in government or in anyway related to anything to do with government. Stop bee employment get people with good matric results please from all races in our country so they can serve us all. Get rid of the minister of police get a person from outside the force with policing knowledge and understanding of what to do. If the top structure do not change we have no chance to see a good force. We have more senior officers that earn big than what effective service they deliver. Stop this force as a place of a job but rather as a passion

Police officers are lazy. They do not want to assist the public. They look past actual offenders and try to find opportunities that will benefit them. They are mostly rude, and think they are above the law. We see police breaking the laws every single day, with nothing done. The fish rots from the head. Make police accountable for their actions and everything will change

It is unfair to the many good police officers in South Africa to write off the entire police force. But the problem starts at the top and as long as the SAPS is used by the government of the day as just another political playing field the police will remain poorly trained, under-staffed, under-paid and under-resourced.

The excessive cader-deployment, especially in the senior ranks, is, I believe, at the root of many of the problems seen by the public in SAPS.

Get rid of Cele and all the corrupt Government Officials as they have lead to the demise of the Police Force and South Africa. They want large salaries, 24/7 security, drive fancy cars, have luxurious holidays overseas, steal and plunder the country, received millions in backhands, do nothing, give their cadres jobs and money and all paid by us the South African Citizens. We have now had enough of all this corruption and it needs to stop now. Jail all these thieving cronies and throw the key away.
It is time that we stand up and demand that WE, SOUTH AFRICA come first .

Firstly, for the SAP to do their job, they need to have the correct equipment / Tools vehicles equipment, leaders that are good examples exc.
Corrupt SAP members they must get rid of.
Members must be taught how to work professionally.
