      • The Rand Water “14% Shock”: In Gauteng, water increases are heavily influenced by Rand Water. For municipalities like Emfuleni and Lesedi, the proposed 14% water hike is nearly triple the rate of the 4.75% salary increase. This suggests that residents are being asked to pay for the bulk provider’s inefficiencies or infrastructure debt. 🌊
      • Lesedi’s Electricity Markup: Lesedi is proposing a 14% electricity hike for domestic users. Since the Nersa-approved bulk increase is roughly 9.01%, this indicates a significant “local markup” that the council is using to fund other operations. 💸
      • Emfuleni’s Infrastructure Crisis: While Emfuleni is sticking closer to the 9.01% benchmark for electricity, their water and sanitation issues (and the 14% hike) are critical. The municipality is under heavy pressure to address sewage leaks and water-shedding, making the high water tariff a major point of contention.
