Mpumalanga’s three districts—Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande, and Nkangala—are presenting some of the most aggressive “Cost of Supply” corrections in the country this year. While many councils are trying to stay near the inflation target for rates, electricity is the primary “shock” factor across the province.

    THE INCREASES ARE AS FOLLOWS

    Staff salaries 4.75%

Electricity Water Rates Refuse / San
    Govan Mbeki (Secunda) 11.2% 5.5% 5.0% 5.5%
    Msukaligwa (Ermelo) 13.0% 6.0% 4.8% 5.0%
    Lekwa (Standerton) 9.01% 6.5% 4.6% 4.6%
    Mkhondo (Piet Retief) 9.01% 4.8% 4.5% 4.5%
    Chief Albert Luthuli 9.01% 4.8% 4.5% 4.5%
    Pixley ka Isaka Seme 9.01% 5.5% 4.6% 5.0%

Msukaligwa Alert: The 13% electricity hike in Ermelo is one of the highest in the province. Local parties have branded it “anti-poor” given the high unemployment and reliance on social grants in the area.
