Effectiveness of increasing taxes to reduce consumption
The wine industry employs many people across the country, including farm laborers, packaging workers, retailers, and wine tourism workers. In 2024, the South African wine industry contributed more than R56.5 billion to the country's GDP.

Increasing taxes to reduce consumption will affect the industry far more than actually reduce consumption. The issue to reduce consumption probably lies deeper than just to tax the industry, furthermore making another illogical and ineffective economic decision that will not really make a difference in the governments supposed intention.

Absolute nonsense!! SA consumers already pay a higher price for speciality wines so why should they be taxed further? If they prefer the higher alcohol content, this is a personal preference and will not necessarily lead to choosing a lower alcohol content wine. It's like fast cars which could be dangerous on the road - the increased price has not diminished the purchase of these vehicles and they are still on the road. It is the behavour of the driver that determines the safety on the road, not the fast car. Thus the behaviour of wine consumers that needs to be addressed and not the increased tax which will have no impact because wines will still be purchased. As in the case during COVID 19. Just led to black market purchases.

I am led to believe that by Increasing Taxes on alcoholic beverages is to discourage excessive use due to greater expense. All that happens is that the poorer people will rather starve their families in order to satisfy themselves.

Increasing alcohol prices through excise tax increases is one of the top evidence-based strategies to reduce alcohol consumption and alcohol harm. There is no question that we should be applying this problem in SA as we have a substantial burden of disease attributable to alcohol consumption. Most of that burden arises from heavy episodic drinking, which is a category of drinking particularly sensitive to price increases.

Alcohol must be one of the most dangerous substances as a whole which reduces any generation to a non contributing group to the country as a whole.

It is probably the biggest home wrecker out there. It causes major medical issues and our fragile medical system in this country cannot cope with this.

Taxes should make alcohol double in price to prevent people from abusing it.

Having said this, please do ensure you fix the border posts to stop the illicit influx if this product as well!!!

All alcohol tax should be increased by 100%. All alchohol companies should be closed down and alcohol should be banned in South Africa. Your body is the temple of the Lord and we should not be consuming alchohol in the first place.

I submit that it is ill considered for several reasons:
These reasons being absurd claims about harm of alcohol which is what the rationale is. It is simply nothing more than an emotional appeal and the design is to extort money under the guise of safety and protection.
1. Who is running south Africa?
It appears that the alcohol argument is again a pet project of the Unelected United Nations and its goons of the WHO. How can this government claim it is democratically elected when we all know it does not represent the majority of persons older than 18 and that it represents only those that have been tricked by the IEC's requirement of full consent to surrender of rights if one wishes to vote?
2. The argument presented relies on complete and utter baloney of citations and figures that have been used in its motivation. Here I refer to the document, THE TAXATION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES issued by NATIONAL TREASURY 2024 which uses the WHO as their centre of motivation.
3. It is well known that the cited counties and groups like the EU, Canada , Philippines are completely different in almost every conceivable way. So again, its rubbish IMO.
4. The fake article that uses FAS or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome was a document concocted in Canada. An I quite directly from it that was written by Pamela Fayerman to target South Africa during the “Aparthied” era as part of the campaign to discredit the Afrikaner nation using rubbish about the so called Dop System as her motivation. “I wondered, while interviewing the lead researcher, Dr. Tim Oberlander, about the analogy between the terrible South African farm worker experience and that of our own First Nations people During the Fur Trade, colonialists gave them alcohol instead of money in trades. And.to this day, the ruinous effects linger. What an absurd researched article when it is clear it had political intent. All her claims like smooth philtrum were proven as nonsense scientifically.

Alcohol is way too affordable and readily accessible more that most basic goods, it's everywhere. In a country battling with alcohol abuse and it's effects someone may think twice if they know they have to pay more and maybe end up buying something good for their health with that money instead of alcohol. Most people say it's freedom or a choice or fun or enjoyment, whatever, where I'm from it's all people work for, everyday. It's destroying our families, our communities our kids because even they can afford to just buy alcohol. Make it less accessible and then it can really be a choice, now it's like it gets thrown on people's faces because it's soo affordable

Firstly what right do you have to tax zero alcohol drinks (0.5%)?
Secondly, increasing taxes to prevent personal freedoms? Get lost. You need to look at ways of reducing bloated gov. Structures and improving delivery. What about reducing your bloated self serving salary bills! No get your hands out of my pocket.

It is not government's place to force behaviour. Your only mandate is infrastructure, external security, and internal security. I wonder which ministers own breweries that will sell on the black-market, like happened with the cigarette ban during the two-tier lockdowns

Government has for years used “sin tax” in an attempt to reduce consumption, this has “definitely” had the desired impact. To make things much simpler we should do away with all these taxes on this and taxes on that, do away with income tax, capital gains tax, etc. and raise VAT to a level that provides for the effective running of the mechanisms of state.
The “rich” will still pay more as they are able to purchase more, but everyone will be paying their share. There could even be a sliding scale or different VAT categories.

Alcohol should be viewed as a luxury item. Taxes should increase to 1. Limit access and 2. Increase revenue.
