BEE policies should be scrapped so that the economy can grow, more people can have jobs, crime can reduce, and poverty can be reduced. Increasing taxes on an already over taxed people is the wrong strategy as it will lead to more job losses. Already a minority supports the majority due to lack of jobs, unproductivity, too high taxes, no tax incentives for investors, etc. By raising taxes the country will go from bad to worse. |

2025-01-24 14:49:23 +02:00 | Gillian | No I do not | Other | There are several issues with this proposal. In a nutshell, increasing the cost of alcohol will not deter people from drinking - they will simply turn to illegal means to acquire it, putting themselves in danger as this alcohol will not be regulated. At the same time, the legal alcohol industry - which supports hundreds of thousands of workers - will be put under financial strain and those workers will be out of work, which will devastate entire families and communities. As always with this government, this is a ridiculous, short-sighted 'solution' to a far greater problem that needs to be addressed by educating the population and growing the economy so that people aren't compelled to drink out of boredom or depression. Seriously, did you learn nothing from your ban on alcohol and cigarettes during the Covid-19 lock downs?? |

2025-01-24 10:38:06 +02:00 | Brian | No I do not | The Discussion Document as a whole | We are overburdened by SO many taxes. This would be just another way for the cANCer to collect more of the peoples money, yet not giving anything at all in return. |

2025-01-23 06:19:32 +02:00 | Adam Johannes | Yes I do | Health impact | I strongly support taxing the alcohol industry. South Africa has become irresponsible when it comes to alcohol, making alcohol more expensive would discourage people from buying alcohol. |

2025-01-21 14:45:50 +02:00 | Josias De Kock | No I do not | Other | No more TAXES!!!!!!! There are many other ways that has not been explored yet, just getting on the old bandwaggon. Taxes taxes, and more taxes. Abuse of alcohol, its no lasting and proper solution. If an alcoholic user or just a social abuser want to drink, they will drink, even if its the last money left to buy food for the children. Its proven in the past. |
2025-01-21 13:35:32 +02:00 | Mad | No I do not | Effectiveness of increasing taxes to reduce consumption | banning alcohol did not work in covid , this will increase illegal sales , it is only to give the government more money to buy votes as they short changed there voters in the last General election seen by the low polling increasing the price of smokes has only increased the illegal imports costing lost taxes , |

2025-01-16 23:37:59 +02:00 | Morne | No I do not | The Discussion Document as a whole | Taxes disappear anyway. There is too much tax on everything as is . We're not getting any value back. It's our business as to how much we do or don't drink. We work for that money. The President gets millions versus R3500PM . He doesn't have stress as they are all doing nothing. There is no purpose on taxing more. Rather tax less. |
2025-01-16 19:23:18 +02:00 | Ulrich | No I do not | The Discussion Document as a whole | Education and well target interventions change behaviour. Increasing the price or age or ....... has never and will never change behaviour. |

2025-01-15 12:48:06 +02:00 | Eugene | No I do not | Effectiveness of increasing taxes to reduce consumption | The wine industry employs many people across the country, including farm laborers, packaging workers, retailers, and wine tourism workers. In 2024, the South African wine industry contributed more than R56.5 billion to the country's GDP. Increasing taxes to reduce consumption will affect the industry far more than actually reduce consumption. The issue to reduce consumption probably lies deeper than just to tax the industry, furthermore making another illogical and ineffective economic decision that will not really make a difference in the governments supposed intention. |

2025-01-14 12:45:19 +02:00 | Joanne | No I do not | The Discussion Document as a whole | Absolute nonsense!! SA consumers already pay a higher price for speciality wines so why should they be taxed further? If they prefer the higher alcohol content, this is a personal preference and will not necessarily lead to choosing a lower alcohol content wine. It's like fast cars which could be dangerous on the road - the increased price has not diminished the purchase of these vehicles and they are still on the road. It is the behavour of the driver that determines the safety on the road, not the fast car. Thus the behaviour of wine consumers that needs to be addressed and not the increased tax which will have no impact because wines will still be purchased. As in the case during COVID 19. Just led to black market purchases. |

2025-01-13 14:28:55 +02:00 | Danie | No I do not | Effectiveness of increasing taxes to reduce consumption | I am led to believe that by Increasing Taxes on alcoholic beverages is to discourage excessive use due to greater expense. All that happens is that the poorer people will rather starve their families in order to satisfy themselves. |

2025-01-13 09:58:27 +02:00 | Richard | Yes I do | No concern | Increasing alcohol prices through excise tax increases is one of the top evidence-based strategies to reduce alcohol consumption and alcohol harm. There is no question that we should be applying this problem in SA as we have a substantial burden of disease attributable to alcohol consumption. Most of that burden arises from heavy episodic drinking, which is a category of drinking particularly sensitive to price increases. |
