I live in a METRO that is well run and consequently I have had little cause to engage with my councillor. This is no excuse for my ignorance but is perhaps indicative of just how successfully the MMETRO is run. Everything is not perfect, but any call I have made to the City of Cape Town, at least for the past 20 years, has resulted in speedy, professional and a generally excellent response for the municipality. |

We need less rhetoric and more actual plans from municipalities. Plan should include timelines, resourcing, and deliverables with firm budgets. |

Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends than good men look on and do nothing". Edmund Burke is typically credited with the other quote - although that is not 100% confirmed. Nevertheless both are relevant - John Stuart Mills more so as his came from his inaugral address in speech that was directly aimed at keeping the corrupt state in check. Bureaucracy and red tape is anathema to a properly functioning society. Weak bureaucrats measure their effectiveness by the paper they produce and the laws and regulations they promulgate. We are drowning in red tape and the more that is added the less it does to improve things. Bureaucrats are (for the most part) weak minded and self serving and will continue to make things worse while spewing empty promises to keep their position. The only way to curtail their incompetence and greed is to shine a big light on them and let them know if they don't deliver at an acceptable standard - they are done. We are too complacent. |
