This fundamental right allows individuals and religious organisations to practise their faith without unnecessary interference, provided they act within the law. For this reason, I do not support the CRL proposal to regulate religion. While I agree that fraudulent individuals who misuse religion for personal gain should be held accountable under existing laws, I do not believe that the State should regulate or control genuine religious institutions. Such regulation could undermine the constitutional right to freedom of religion and create unnecessary interference in matters of faith. Churches and religious organisations should remain free to govern their spiritual affairs while complying with the laws of the country regarding financial accountability, public safety, and criminal conduct. Where abuse or unlawful activities occur, the appropriate legal authorities should investigate and prosecute those responsible rather than imposing broad regulations on all religious bodies. Religious freedom is a cornerstone of our democracy. It must be protected while ensuring that existing laws are effectively enforced against those who exploit religion for personal or financial benefit. |
