OFFICIAL SUMMARY BY THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN

Cape Town’s coast is central to our city’s sense of place, identity, and global
attractiveness. Our coastline is an asset with great social amenity value, and is of huge importance to our local and regional economy. As such, the City of Cape Town has developed a draft Coastal By-law with the intention to:

  • Ensure that the coastline, and the opportunities that it provides, belong to and
remain accessible to all Capetonians and South Africans
  • Ensure that the coastline is held, managed, maintained, and protected as
common property for the benefit of current, as well as future generations
  • Protect the coastline from encroachment by private properties abutting the
    coast
  • Enable the City to more effectively administer, regulate and manage the coastal zone as a highly dynamic and sensitive natural environment
  • Improve public safety along the City’s coastline; and
  • Ensure the protection and management of the coastline to preserve its social
amenity value and importance to our local and regional economy
