The Minister of Agriculture, Mr John Steenhuisen, called on the public to comment on the proposed regulations for the Exportation of Live Animals by Sea.

South Africa exports thousands of live animals by sea each year, mainly cattle to Mauritius and sheep to the Middle East. Last year 52 animal welfare organisations urged government to ban this cruel trade. Instead, they’ve proposed new regulations in an attempt to legitimise and perpetuate this harmful practice.

The Minister will consider all comments before a decision is taken on this matter.
