We are supposed to reduce the global dipendence on coal, not to open new mines.

Exploitation is the name of the game. This project has begun illegally proving that not everything is above board. I also think if we do extract resources it should at least be done by a South African company. This feels a bit like robbery in the name of job creation . I’m not naive about needing resources for all the things we enjoy but a careful considerations need to be done as this is a unique area with unique biodiversity. Is the cost of pollution and destruction of habitats worth it all?
Will South Africans in the area truly benefit from this ? Or is it a pr stunt from politicians to fill their pockets ?
WWF has been involved in a huge study and about two years ago stated that about 70 per cent of the world’s biodiversity has been lost. Can we afford to loose such special area to open mines? Almost 700 000 trees to be removed in this mega project.
This is home to an array of life that will have no where else to go.

Biodiversity and the natural environment. Is linked to Co2 removal, think of the tiny krill in the Antarctic that are a keystone species so small and they remove more Co2 then previously thought. (As in more than the Amazon. )
Microbes a world we have just begun to study. Science proves over and over for humans to be able to live on earth we need healthy ecosystems. They protects us from extreme weather events , disease and a biodiverse world is a beautiful one.
Mines and maize fields simply do not move the soul.

Forests act as water pumps and bring rain inland . Removing so many trees could lead to drought in other areas. So the effect could be larger than just one localised area.
The impact of the loss of biodiversity is complex but always interconnected biodiversity directly impacts us all because it affects weather patterns globally.
There is so much to say on this. Climate change, fossil fuels, community development, tourism, conservation. I hope one day humans will be able to view nature as an entity with rights of its own.

There is not control on Chinese destruction. The very fact that they have ALREADY commenced illigally, shows the disdain for law. The Corporates and the Chinese do not care about our biodiversity, the community they will destroy, the water they will steal.

The coal we already have is not able to reach ports anyway.
Leave the land alone.... or mother nature will destroy us.

GO TO HELL CHINESE. WE HAVE SOLD OUR SOUL ALREADY.

Stop open mining - period - it is irreversible toxicity for short term financial gain. Mindless

The world wants to stop coal burning. Why do they want more coal mines?
This is just to make money by certain parties and harm the environment. First they want to stop the coal generating plants, now they want more coal mines.

A THOUSAND TIMES NO TO THIS PROJECT...China gets to use coal but we close down our mines for RSA?? China is NOT to be trusted with our precious resources or people. They supply their own labour and care nothing for the environment.

There is no convincing argument that there is an economic benefit sufficient to compensate for the huge environmental destruction which is already being caused, and will be caused, by this project. It is also strange that a steel industry is to be established when existing steel plants are being closed down. There is something very odorous about this project which needs to be thoroughly investigated.

The scheme to turn the wild heart of Limpopo into another Sacrifice Zone for coal and steel is extremely high-risk with grossly skewed benefits in favour of foreign and fossil fuel industry interests and will come at a terrible cost to the sensitive environment and scarce water resources, poor rural communities, local industries from farming to tourism and the emerging potential of the biodiversity economy, which are all vulnerable to the effects of highly polluting industries and the intensifying climate crisis, as well as South Africa’s ailing domestic steel industry which the MMSEZ will cannibalise, and the debt-burdened public purse given the eye-watering capital costs of developing the zone’s supporting infrastructure.
