In South Africa we have sooooo many problems. Waisting money on such insignificant matters is borderline criminal considering that some communities don't have water or electricity and other basic services. These types of frivolous expenses should not even be considered

Never heard of this person. I am from Johannesburg but now live in Durban. The ANC is famous for not listening to the people. They make a sow of listening to the people but pay no attention . We woke up one day in Durban and and many main roads throughout the city was renamed at one time. Atrocious!

Renaming Sandton Drive to Leila Khaled Drive is celebrating the first woman to hijack an airplane, and that is unacceptable.

The road should remain called Sandton Drive as this is a name that people know.

Name erodes social cohesion
Name changes are absurd generally and Sandton took 50 years to become globally recognized. Changing the name of one of the most well known streets in the country to such an unknown person makes no sense and will cost a fortune.

Call it First Avenue, Sandown. This and the legal case bought before the ICJ is a disgrace to God, the God of Israel who WILL rebuke you and to the LORD Jesus.

Name erodes social cohesion
South Africa has a good data base of heroes that have contributed to the struggle and this move promotes racial divide and there is no relevance to our history and the south africa we are building today. Our children will be left with the burden that they wont even relate to.

She is a murdering terrorist and an icon of jewish hate. Her motives were violence and death of all non arad sufi muslims. Shes the worst creature to possibly be considered outside of other ANC members. Why rename a city road after a terrorist? There werent any black people EVER who lived in the Sandton area before whites built it. There were NEVER arabs in southern africa past Zimbabwe. We are NOT a muslim, arab, or terrorist nation. We must not rename a road to this piece of shit.

Name erodes social cohesion
Leila Khaled is a well-known figure associated with terrorism. As a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), she was involved in two notorious airplane hijackings in 1969 and 1970, actions that endangered countless lives and left lasting trauma for many. Honoring someone with such a history of violence and terror would send a deeply troubling message, suggesting that our community condones or even glorifies acts of terrorism.

This proposed renaming could create deep divisions within the community, especially among those who have been personally affected by terrorism or violence. It also risks damaging the city’s image and discouraging investment, tourism, and business interests in the area.

Rather than recognizing a figure with such a controversial and violent legacy, I believe it would be far more meaningful to celebrate South Africa’s own incredible leaders who have dedicated their lives to promoting peace, unity, and justice. Honoring such individuals would not only reflect our country’s history and values but also inspire future generations to work towards a more inclusive and harmonious society.

I respectfully urge you to reconsider this proposal and choose a name that brings our community together, celebrating our rich and proud heritage, rather than dividing us.

History is history. Some of the new names I can not even pronounce. There are enough NEW neighborhoods and towns that can get one of these unpronounceable names!

This person has nothing to do with South African heritage. There is no reason her legacy should be carried in Jozi streets when we have far more important heroes to honor here in our country. Let's lift up and honor those within our country who fighting for change.

I am not sure people are against the name change. Most people are just prejudice toward african heroes which border to racism. In Cape Town we still have a street called verwoerd which I hate. Yet when the people tried to change it the white afrikaner appose the name change. I tell all my freinds that we should call it Sartjie Baartman just as revenge.

What is the point of this. The old name is not offensive nor does it have any negative connotations. This is simply a waste of money for no benefit.
