### From alleged terrorist to potential future president: Farhad Hoomer launches Sharia law party

[_News24_](https://www.news24.com/southafrica/news/from-alleged-terrorist-to-potential-future-president-farhad-hoomer-launches-sharia-law-party-20250516-1147)–
The controversial Farhad Hoomer – who was accused of terrorism and identified as
the leader of a local ISIS cell and hit with sanctions by the United States – has
applied to register his own political party: the Islamic State of Africa (ISA).

He said the party wanted to “bring back Sharia law” and was hopeful it would appear
on the ballot in the 2026 municipal elections.

Although he said the plan was for the party to contest only in the eThekwini region
next year, Hoomer did not rule out the prospect of one day becoming president.

Hoomer made headlines in 2018 when he was arrested and charged with various crimes,
including offences under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist
and Related Activities Act.

This was in connection with a deadly attack at the Imam Hussain Mosque in Verulam,
north of Durban, during which local mechanic Shaheed Abbas Essop was killed after
his throat was slit. Two others were also stabbed but survived.

Hoomer and his co-accused were also linked to the planting of a series of incendiary
devices in and around the city. The case was, however, struck from the roll in 2020
after a string of delays.

The following year, Hoomer was again arrested – this time along with five others–
and charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well as possession
of suspected stolen property following a raid at a warehouse in Mayville. That case,
too, was subsequently withdrawn, though.

“Between 2017 and 2018, Farhad Hoomer helped organise and begin the operations of
a Durban, South Africa-based ISIS cell,” the US Department of the Treasury said
at the time.

Hoomer raised funds through kidnap-for-ransom operations and extortion of major
businesses, which provided more than one million South African rands in revenue
for his cell.”

Under certain circumstances, you can run for and be appointed to public office even
with a conviction attached to your name.

The proposed name, abbreviation and symbol, as well as the party’s constitution
or its deed of foundation cannot contain anything “which portrays the propagation
or incitement of violence or hatred or which causes serious offence to any section
of the population on the grounds of race, gender, sex, ethnic origin, colour, sexual
orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture or language;
or which indicates that persons will not be admitted to membership of the party
or welcomed as supporters of the party on the grounds of their race, ethnic origin
or colour”.
